  •   Unemployment Assistance

 Unemployment insurance would be expanded to provide an extra $600 a week for four months on top of state benefits, which currently vary in length and amount. Eligibility would be expanded to cover workers in the gig economy such as Uber drivers. It also contains a funding provision to encourage states to waive a waiting period for payment of unemployment benefits.


  •   IRS for Personal Taxes

The federal government has moved the tax filing deadline to July 15. You don’t have to file your return or make payments until then, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin wrote on Twitter.


  • Mortgage & Rental Assistance

A coalition of mortgage industry groups representing banks, finance companies and others has said it will also grant payment suspensions of at least three months and up to 12 months to homeowners whose loans are not owned by Fannie or Freddie, but they have said their effort requires a federal backstop.  Call your mortgage provider and make sure you understand the terms of the suspension or postponement of your mortgage payment.  If you rent go to Justshelter.org for assistance.

 

  • Help and Assistance with Utilities

Some utility providers are offering to stop cutting people off for nonpayment.  A number of large internet companies have agreed not   to terminate residential or small business customers who can’t pay their bills: AT&T, Comcast, Cox, RCN, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. A full list of companies is available on the Federal   Communications Commission site.  It is not yet clear whether companies want customers to call to invoke this relief and provide  proof or whether they will offer it automatically to everyone. People  who need help should call and ask.


 

  •  Stimulus Package     

The package provides about $500 billion in loans and assistance for big companies, including struggling airlines, as well as states and cities. There is a separate pot of about $350 billion for small businesses. For individuals the package provides direct payments to lower- and middle-income Americans of $1,200 for each adult and $500 for each child. Unemployment insurance would be vastly expanded. There also is money for hospitals, some of which are on  the verge of being overwhelmed.
